Reinstating the OTA

May 31st, 2007 by John Wonderlich · No Comments

Update: It looks like the markup will be held on Wednesday, June 6th; time and location TBA.

The House will have a chance to show that it values technology and science on Monday.

The Subcommittee on Legislative Branch Appropriations has a chance to reinstate funding for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, which hasn’t functioned since 1995, when it was defunded. A markup session on the appropriations bill will happen on this coming Monday, June 4th.

Since OTA reports are put online when they’re published, this move would signal a commitment to legislation based on non-partisan facts assessed by a bipartisan team, which could be reviewed publicly.

We (The Sunlight Foundation) are asking for citizens to call their Representatives and ask them to sign the Dear Colleague letter that was just sent, and to return it to Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz and Ranking Member Wamp.

Here’s an archive of all of the old OTA reports, and here’s Paul Blumenthal’s coverage on The Sunlight Foundation blog.
