I’m starting to experiment with different methods of live lobbying disclosure, posting more frequently about who I’m meeting with where we’re progressing. The twitter badge on the right side of the page displays updates from either the web, or from SMS messages–enabling remote updates in the form of short text messages.
Look for more frequent updates on what we’re up to, and also weekly updates on the status of our goals.
The CRS reports we’ve chosen for this week both fit into the theme of lobbying disclosure.
Lobbying Regulations on Non-Profit Organizations, from November, 2002, is particularly relevant right now, since the deadline for filing disclosure reports for the House and Senate is August 14th. There also a great explanation of the different section 501 classifications of tax exempt status. Some of these provisions are being tightened or enhanced by S.1, but this report provides helpful background information.
The other report I’d like to point out today is this ethics overview: Lobbying Congress: An Overview of Legal Provisions and Congressional Ethics Rules. A discussion of the current reform efforts will be best undertaken with an appreciation of previous efforts.
