More on the Hyperlocal

February 29th, 2008 by John Wonderlich · 1 Comment

From the MySociety.org blog comes news that they’ve launched their groupsnearyou.com project, adding a new kind of player to the hyperlocal space.  The site allows for entering of new local email lists and online groups, so public spaces online are more visible and useful (they have even set up an API).  It seems as though they could use a little more international content, so if you have a favorite local listserve, you can easily add it to their database.

I’m excited about the potential of this project, and others like everyblock (which I’m waiting for a DC version of).  I expect this sort of local aggregation to eventually have a heavy impact on local politics, and perhaps even help national politicians stay in touch with their constituents’ concerns.  I know if I represented a district, I’d be all over the zeitgeist of my local listserves.
